Ray Teret convicted of historic sex abuse

Ray Teret, the former DJ, was convicted of 18 out of 33 counts of sexual offences on 5th December 2014.

The details aren’t known as yet, but we know that he was convicted of 7 rapes and 11 indecent assaults. He was acquitted of 1 offence of buggery, 3 of indecency with children and 11 other counts of rape.

The jury in the trial were told that Mr Teret had a previous conviction for having sex with a 15 year old, which would have undermined his defence that he had no sexual interest in children.

Sentence was adjourned until next Thursday. He will likely get a sentence of 15 years plus. As we said the other day in relation to another case, it does not seem likely that there is the need for a life sentence. We got that one wrong however, and it may be possible.

We’ll have a look at what he gets next week.

  1. Well, the court cases & sentencing are coming thick & fast. About time & tables are turing, as Cathy Hymas, one of the young people he abused, indecently assaulted & raped said in The Guardian today, ” I have done nothing wrong. I’ve got nothing to hide. It’s the abusers who should be ashamed. I hope they are all quaking in their boots right now.” She is a counsellor now. The guilty verdict means she can finally move on after 40 years. It frees me. This is encouragement for all survivor/thrivers like myself. However, reporting is not easy & retraumatising. Something I want to tackle with the judicial system.

Dan, do you have any examples of harassment & stalking cases & sentencing?

Also is sexual harassment covered in it? I know sexual harassment covered in workplace & employment law with only a 3 mth window. Something I want to campaign about.

    Many thanks
