We covered the case of Gayle Newland, who got 8 years on 11th November 2015 for Assault by Penetration. In our coverage of it, we pondered the question of whether there would be an appeal.

We were hoping that there would be and, on 17th November 2015, we learned that Ms Newland has lodged an appeal against conviction. At the moment, we don’t know if there will an appeal against sentence (although we suspect that there will be).

There is a fact sheet on how appeals against conviction work. It was a very interesting case and one that we will certainly be keeping an eye on.

Dan is a barrister at 2 Dr. Johnson’s Buildings practising in crime.

    1. Based on Dan’s original piece I don’t get this at all. The victim said she was blindfolded….hhmmm…..did they go to the cinema, or maybe a concert or just to McDonalds together ? Surely she must have seen her ‘attacker’ in the normal course of the relationship ?

Anyone got more insight as to what the ‘real’ story is as I suspect there is more to come out during appeal.
